Tan Binh is the district of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, in the north-west of Ho Chi Minh City, about 5 to 6 km from District 1 in a straight line (7 to 8 km by road). Around the airport, the district is a dense mix of residential streets, offices, markets and small businesses, with some of the city's busiest roads, such as Truong Chinh, Cong Hoa and Hoang Van Thu. For visitors, it is above all the place to sleep before an early flight or after a late arrival.

On this site Tan Binh covers the old district, including the airport and the streets around it. Since July 2025 it has been divided into new wards, such as Tan Son Nhat and Tan Son, but addresses and residents still use the name Tan Binh.

Who should stay in Tan Binh?

Tan Binh suits travellers with early or late flights, short layovers and business trips to the companies and offices of the north of the city. Many hotels are within 1 or 2 km of the terminals, some within walking distance, and several offer an airport shuttle. It also suits budget travellers, with prices lower than in the centre, and those visiting friends or family in the north-west of the city.

The trade-off is distance from the sights: District 1 is about 7 to 8 km away by road, 20 to 25 minutes by car outside the rush hours and up to an hour at peak times. Tan Binh has little to offer tourists in the evening, and the roads near the airport are noisy and busy.

Hotels and other places to stay in Tan Binh

The 217 properties listed in this zone are mostly hotels, followed by apartments and aparthotels. Most hotels are two- and three-star properties aimed at airport travellers, with a few four-star hotels; many have 24-hour front desks, luggage storage and airport shuttles, which the listings mention. Prices are lower than in District 1 for the same standard.

When choosing, check the distance to the terminal in each listing: domestic flights use Terminal 3, opened in 2025, and international flights the international terminal. Some hotels charge for the shuttle, and some rooms in narrow buildings have no windows.

What is there to do in Tan Binh?

Tan Binh is not a sightseeing district, but it has a few places for a short walk: Hoang Van Thu Park, by the airport road, is one of the larger green spaces in the north of the city, and the Vietnam People's Air Force Museum displays aircraft and military equipment. The district's markets, such as those around Bay Hien, and its many local restaurants are good for a meal near the hotel.

For the city's main sights, District 1 and District 3 are a 20 to 30-minute ride away, and Phu Nhuan, with its food streets, is next door.

How do you get to Tan Binh?

From the terminals of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, most hotels in Tan Binh are a few minutes away by car, motorbike taxi or hotel shuttle. To reach the centre, a ride-hailing car to District 1 costs about 150,000 to 250,000 VND, and bus 109 costs about 15,000 to 20,000 VND and takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Metro Line 1 does not reach the airport or Tan Binh. A second airport, Long Thanh, about 40 km east of the city, is due to start commercial operations at the end of 2026; check which airport your flight uses before booking a hotel near Tan Son Nhat.

When is Tan Binh at its best?

Tan Binh is a year-round airport base. The dry season, from about December to April, makes the ride into the centre more pleasant, while during the rainy season, from about May to November, heavy showers can slow traffic to and from the airport: allow extra time for the trip. Around Tet, in late January or February, the airport is at its busiest, and hotels near the terminals fill early.

How much time should you allow for the airport?

Even though the airport is close, traffic around Tan Son Nhat is among the heaviest in the city. Truong Son street, which leads to the terminals, and the main roads around them, such as Cong Hoa, Truong Chinh and Hoang Van Thu, are often congested in the morning and evening rush hours, between about 07:00 and 09:00 and between 17:00 and 19:00, and after heavy rain. A ride that takes 5 minutes at night can take 20 or 30 minutes at peak times.

From a hotel in Tan Binh, allow at least 30 minutes to reach the terminal at busy times, plus the usual check-in time for your flight: domestic flights leave from Terminal 3 and international flights from the international terminal, so check which one you need before ordering a car. Many hotels offer a shuttle, and the front desk can usually book a taxi at a fixed time, which helps for very early departures.

For arrivals, a hotel a few minutes from the terminal avoids a long ride into the centre after a late flight, and the next morning you can travel to District 1 outside the rush hours. For layovers of a few hours, check whether the hotel allows early check-in or day use, which some airport hotels offer.
