Go Vap is a large residential district in the north of Ho Chi Minh City, just north of Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Phu Nhuan, and one of the most densely populated parts of the city. It is the Saigon most visitors never see: long streets of shophouses, local markets, coffee shops, schools and alleys, where daily life goes on with few tourists in sight.

On this site the Go Vap zone covers the old district and the neighbouring District 12 to the north. Since July 2025 both have been divided into new wards, but addresses and residents still use the names Go Vap and District 12.

Who should stay in Go Vap?

Go Vap suits budget travellers, visitors staying with friends or family in the north of the city, business travellers with work in the area, and those who want to experience local life far from the tourist centre. It is also very close to the airport, which borders the district to the south.

The trade-offs are distance from the centre and the lack of sights: District 1 is about 8 to 10 km away, 30 to 45 minutes by car outside the rush hours and longer at peak times, and there are few attractions or tourist services in the district. Most guests come for the prices or for a specific reason to be in the area.

Hotels in Go Vap and District 12

The 75 properties listed in this zone are almost all hotels, with a handful of apartments and homestays. Most are simple two- and three-star hotels, often in tall, narrow buildings on the main streets, aimed at domestic travellers and business visitors, and prices are among the lowest in the city. Guest ratings are good, with a median of about 8.2 out of 10 on this site.

When choosing, check the distance to the airport and to the main roads in each listing, as the district is large. Some hotels do not serve breakfast, but street-food stalls and cafés are never far away.

What is there to do in Go Vap?

Go Vap is not a sightseeing district, but its markets, such as Hanh Thong Tay Market, and its streets of local restaurants and cafés show everyday Saigon. Gia Dinh Park, one of the larger green spaces in the north of the city, is on the edge of the district, near Phu Nhuan and the airport. The Quang Trung software park and exhibition centres are in neighbouring District 12.

For the city's main sights, the museums and markets of District 1 and District 3 are a 30 to 45-minute ride away, and Phu Nhuan, with its food streets, is close by.

How do you get to Go Vap?

From Tan Son Nhat International Airport, most of Go Vap is 1 to 4 km away, a 10 to 25-minute ride depending on traffic. Ride-hailing cars and motorbike taxis are the usual way to get around, and city buses run towards the centre and the airport.

Metro Line 1 does not serve Go Vap. To reach District 1, a ride-hailing car takes 30 to 45 minutes outside the rush hours.

When is Go Vap at its best?

Go Vap is a year-round base for local stays. The dry season, from about December to April, makes trips into the centre more comfortable, while during the rainy season, from about May to November, heavy afternoon showers can slow traffic. Around Tet, the Lunar New Year in late January or February, many residents return to their home provinces and the district becomes much quieter, with some shops and restaurants closed.

What is daily life like in Go Vap?

Go Vap is one of the most lived-in parts of Saigon. Its streets wake up early with breakfast stalls and coffee shops, and in the evening they fill with families eating out, shopping and meeting friends. The district has a young population, with many students and young workers, which gives it a lively café and street-food scene: milk tea shops, grilled snacks, hot pots and noodle stalls line its busiest roads, often open late into the night.

There are few bars aimed at foreigners and little English away from the larger hotels and chains, but prices are low and the welcome is usually warm. For travellers curious about everyday Saigon, a walk through a local market in the morning and an evening meal at the street stalls are the best introduction to the district, and both cost a fraction of the same experience in District 1.

The airport's position just to the south makes Go Vap practical for a night before or after a flight, especially for travellers with friends or family in the north of the city. For sightseeing days, plan on taxi rides of 30 to 45 minutes into the centre, or combine a stay here with a few nights in District 1 or District 3.
